Shreveport-Bossier’s Mardi Gras season kicks off with a special exhibit, “The Enchanting World of Fantasy Masks,” at the Louisiana State Exhibit Museum.  The exhibit features elaborate one-of-a-kind fantasy masks by Shreveport mask designer Dennis Beckman.

The exhibit will run through the 2019 Mardi Gras season from Twelfth Night January 6th – March 4th, 2019.  Opening reception is Sunday, January 6, 2019 from 2 – 4 pm and is free to the public.  During the opening reception, attendees will be able to try on for “selfies” in a special selection of the designer’s masks and will be treated to tastings of Mardi Gras King cakes by local bakeries.

Beckman is this year’s King of the Krewe of Highland.  After 48 years in San Francisco creating masks for an international clientele through his store, The Enchanted Crystal, the artist returned to his native home in Shreveport where he has been creating his works of art.

Masks at the exhibit range from elegant to exotic and feature various themes such as All that Glitters, Mardi Gras, Into the Woods, The Dark Forest and Floral Fantasies.  Beckman creates his art pieces using jewels, sequins, crystals, feathers and an extensive array of unique materials.  His masks are comfortable to wear, and his more elaborate masks are often collected and used as home décor.

The artist’s custom masks are also showcased and for sale as this sister’s shop, The Enchanted Garden, located at 2429 Line Avenue in Shreveport.  Call 318-227-1213 for additional information.  The Enchanted Garden also features Beckman’s one-of-a-kind Mardi Gras pins and fascinators, as well as a large selection of Louisiana and Mardi Gras items, many of which are created exclusively for The Enchanted Garden.

The Enchanting World of Fantasy Masks exhibit will be on display on the west wing gallery through the carnival season, until March 4, 2019. The public is invited to view the exhibit during regular museum hours: Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. until 4 p.m. The museum is located at 3015 Greenwood Road, between Hearne and Jewella Streets.
